Ten TV Programmes You Used to Run Home From School For, And Made Your Weekend.

With Mark Gosselaar and Dennis Haskins (Zack Morris and Mr. Belding) talking about a possible Saved By The Bell reunion, I immediately went into nostalgia overload thinking about the programmes, along with their theme tunes, that we, people in our mid to late 20’s, used to love back in the day. They really don’t make it like these anymore!

10: California Dreams:

A high-school show produced by Peter Engel (he also produced Saved by the Bell). This show centred around a group of high school students who had a band called, you guessed it, The California Dreams. Unfortunately they never did make it, and the group went their separate ways as they left high school. Their last performance on The Pier still makes me emotional!

 9: Miami 7:

Yep, the programme with the cheesy songs and even cheesier acting from pop group S Club 7, as they leave England and try to make it big in America. I dare you not to sing along with them!

8: Hang Time:

This programme focused on a high school basketball team. The team was predominately all male, except for one female Julie Connor. I always felt sorry for Julie, all her boyfriends left her (and the show) pretty much after one season! During its six season run, the cast changed almost in its entirety.

7: Kenan and Kel:

‘Who loves Orange Soda, Kel loves Orange Soda…’

That is all.

6: Sabrina The Teenage Witch:

Teenage Witch Sabrina and her smart talking cat Salem spread their magic on us for seven seasons. While the first few series were entertaining, the show did lack that certain something when Sabrina went to college. High School shows that move onto college rarely work, but it was a happy ending when Sabrina Left her fiancé Adam at the altar and sped off on a motorbike with Harvey, the true love of her life.

5: Sister, Sister:

Everyone’s favourite set of twins Tia and Tamera Mowry (after Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of course), starred in this programme as twins who were adopted separately at birth and only happened to accidently bump into each other at the mall when they were fourteen. Tia and her mother Lisa ended up moving in to Tamera and her dad Ray’s house, where they all lived together until the final episode.

4: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers:

The original Power Rangers is of course the best! It centred around high school students who had special ‘powers’ to defend the earth and fight the bad guys. They all had a specific coloured costume that they morphed into, to keep their identities secret form everyone else (I always wanted to be Kimberley, the pink Ranger!).

3: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air:

Undoubtedly it had the most popular theme tune, as everyone of a certain age knows it off by heart! The show starred Will Smith, caused upheaval in his Uncle Philips life when he moved into his Bel Air mansion after a fight and his mom got scared…era the theme tune will tell you the rest.

2: Pugwall’s Summer:

Another programme about a high school band, called The Orange Organics, as Pugwall attempts to make a million dollars before breakfast. It might not be as instantly recognisable as some of the other shows, but it was definitely part of my weekends! And he did make that million dollars before breakfast in the end!

1: Saved By The Bell:

Last, but definitely not least is Saved By The Bell. We laughed at loveable but goofy nerd Screech, as well as tough but good natured principal Mr. Belding as he was constantly pranked by Zack? The heart break at the end of Zack and Kelly’s relationship was felt (thank got they got back together and ended up marrying in the end!) While the show was mainly light hearted, it did deal with typical teenage issues. Who can forget Jessie’s meltdown after she gets hooked on caffeine pills? While the show had many spin-offs, none of them ever compared to the original.

Were these programmes part of your childhood? Did I leave anything out that you feel should be there? Any show from your childhood that you wish would make a comeback?
